A miter saw is something that will help you to make accurate crosscuts at a selected angle by putting a large backsaw or a mounted circular saw blade down on a board or a work piece. How does a Miter saw work
I hope now you have a basic idea on what a miter saw is. But this part of this article is actually very crucial. First of all I would say I am not an expert of using a miter saw. But here I will share my experience with you on how to use a miter saw properly with a step by step guideline. If you have used a miter saw before then it is ok. It will help you to learn proper techniques but if you don’t. Be careful my friends. Power tools can be dangerous. So, based on my experience of using a miter saw I will share 8 steps on how to use a miter saw properly. Let’s get started.
1.Select the Type and Size:
As I have mentioned before, you will find a variety of miter saws available in the market with different types and sizes. First you need to decide what your projects will be and then decide what type of miter saw you need and what will be the size. Here I will share a basic idea on the type and sizes.
- Size: The size of the miter saw is determined by the blade diameter. It usually varies between 8 to 12 inches. The wideness or thickness of the material will depend on the diameter of the saw blade.
- Classification: There are three kinds of miter saws available in the market. They are:
- Standard Miter Saw: This is the basic miter saw. It will help you to make perpendicular cut on a material at 45 degrees anti clockwise and 45 degrees clockwise. Standard meter saw has an angle scale that keeps the blades aligned correctly.
- Compound Miter Saw: It has the ability to lean the blade from vertical to a specific angle.
- Sliding Miter Saw: Sliding miter saw is similar to a radial arm saw. You can cut a wider piece of material because it can be pushed through the material being cut.
2. How much power your miter saw need:
As a miter saw is worked on electricity, so firstly you need to decide how much power you projects actually need. A Standard miter saw is designed to draw 12 to 15 amps and it will operate on approx. 120 volts. If you want to cut large pieces of wood, you might need an industrial machine which may occur special wiring.
3. Purchase or Rent a miter saw:
So, finally you have decided the type of your projects and the type of saw you need based on the features. Now let’s come to the point. In the market the price range of miter saws varies from $60 to $1200. So, If you want to work on a one time project or only for hobby, I would recommend to rent or borrow it from your friends or a hardware store. On the other hand if you are thinking to work on a long term basis, it is recommended to go for an investment.
4. Create a workstation before start working:
Well, now you have purchased or borrowed a miter saw for your project. Now before you start you project, make sure to create a workstation for doing this kind of stuff. Because when you are cutting a larger piece of wood, you might be comfortable to do it on the floor, but if you do it on a table or a bench, it will definitely improve the quality of your work.
5. Read the Manual Carefully:
Before you start working with a miter saw or any other electronic product, make sure that you have read the product manual carefully. It will help you to know about the safety rules, correct extension cords, how much electric supply will need and lots more. This is a must before using the miter saw.
6. Learn about the machine:
You have to learn about the different parts of the miter saw to achieve the proper output. You must have to be aware of the blades, angle indicator, power switch, blade guard, locking clamps etc.
7. Unlock and Release the Saw:
Before start cutting woods, make sure you raise and lower the blades for several times. It will help you to become familiar with the machine. Besides, this trick will help you to avoid accidents.
